Getting started / Lesson 03

Not quite right? Take the next small step

The first answer is a starting point. Explain what works and what needs changing, and the conversation can move closer to your goal.

By the end of this lesson

Identify one specific problem in an answer and improve it with a focused follow-up.

01Before you begin

Take an existing answer and choose one thing to improve: length, tone, structure, or a missing example.

02Try it together

Keep the parts you like and say exactly what should change. Specific feedback is easier to act on than “this isn’t good”.

An example to make your own
Keep the three main points from your previous answer.
Make the tone more natural, reduce jargon, and add an everyday example.
Keep the whole answer under 200 words.

Make this example fit your own task. Start simple, then adjust.

KEEP

Keep

Preserve the parts that already help.

CHANGE

Adjust

Say exactly what needs to change.

CHECK

Compare

Judge the result against clear criteria.

03How do you know it worked?

Compare both versions. Are the parts you wanted to keep still there? Has the main problem improved? Did the revision introduce a new problem?

04Now it’s your turn.

YOUR TURN / PRACTICE

Use “Keep …, but change …” to write a follow-up for one of your own tasks.

When you’re done, take a moment to check:

These examples practice communication and verification. Model responses will vary. Published guides will include screenshots, applicable versions, and verification dates.
